Magnesium Bath Salts: Benefits, How to Use and Which Blend Is Right for You
Ten minutes in warm water is one of the easiest, most affordable ways to wind down. Here is what magnesium does, how to use bath salts at home, and how to choose your blend.
If you have ever stepped out of a long hot bath and noticed your shoulders sit a little lower than usual, you already understand the appeal of bath salts. The right blend turns ten minutes in warm water into one of the easiest, most affordable ways to wind down.
This guide covers what magnesium does for the body, how to use bath salts at home and how to choose between the four blends in our range: Calming, Soothing, Uplifting and Pure.
What are magnesium bath salts?
Magnesium bath salts are made from magnesium sulphate, also known as Epsom salts. They dissolve completely in warm water and are absorbed through the skin during your bath. Most blends, including ours, are then layered with organic essential oils to give each blend a different purpose and scent.
Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in the human body, involved in over 300 enzyme reactions including muscle relaxation and nervous system regulation. Many Australians do not get enough through diet alone, which is part of why a magnesium bath can feel so disproportionately good after a busy day.
Three reasons people use magnesium bath salts
To help tired muscles unwind. If you have been on your feet, lifting, running or driving long distances, a magnesium soak helps your muscles feel less tight by the next morning. Cyclists, parents of small humans and tradies all find a use for them.
To help end a busy day. Warm water lowers your heart rate. Magnesium is associated with calmer sleep. The combination is a simple ritual that signals to your body that the working part of the day is over.
To create a small moment of self care. Light a candle, lock the door, lie back. You do not need a day spa to feel like you have had one.
How to use bath salts at home
In the bath
Run a warm bath, not a hot one. Add one to two cups of bath salts under the running tap so they dissolve. Soak for fifteen to twenty minutes. Drink a glass of water afterwards.
No bath? Try a foot bath
Not everyone has a bathtub and you do not need one to get the benefit. A foot bath is a great option and for tired, aching feet it is hard to beat.
Fill a large bowl or a tub with warm water, stir through a quarter to half a cup of bath salts and let your feet soak for fifteen to twenty minutes. It is perfect after a long day standing, a big walk or a hard session on the bike. Add a towel underneath, sit back somewhere comfortable and let your feet do the unwinding while the rest of you catches up.
Our four magnesium bath salt blends
We make every blend by hand in the Adelaide Hills in 1kg packs. Each is layered with a different organic essential oil blend so you can pick what fits the mood. Here is exactly what goes into each one.

Calming Magnesium Bath Salts
Essential oil blend of organic Lavender, Frankincense and Ylang Ylang. This is the blend most people start with. Lavender settles the mind, frankincense grounds it and ylang ylang softens the edges of a long day. Reach for it on evenings when your head feels too loud and you want to settle before bed.

Soothing Magnesium Bath Salts
Essential oil blend of organic Lavender, Peppermint, Rosemary, Juniper Berry and Lemongrass. A fresher, herbal mix made for tired skin and tight muscles. Good after long walks, exercise classes or anything that leaves you a little sore.

Uplifting Magnesium Bath Salts
Essential oil blend of Rosemary, organic Bergamot and Basil. A bright, energising mix. Use it for a morning bath or when you want to feel refreshed rather than ready for bed. A good pick for the cold months when getting out of bed is harder.

Pure Magnesium Bath Salts
Just magnesium sulphate, no essential oils. The right pick if you have sensitive skin, prefer no scent or want to add your own essential oils. Also handy for athletes who want pure magnesium without anything aromatic.

Which blend should you choose?
If you want a night-time wind down: Calming or Soothing.
If you want a morning lift: Uplifting.
If you have sensitive skin or want a clean base: Pure.
Many people keep two on the shelf for different moods. They last well. A 1kg pack is roughly four to six baths depending on how generous you are.
A few notes on safety
Do not use the Calming, Soothing or Uplifting blends after 12 weeks of pregnancy. If you are pregnant, check with your healthcare provider before use. Not for human consumption. If you have any specific medical conditions, check with your doctor before adding magnesium to your routine. Discontinue use if your skin reacts.
The simple version
A warm bath or a foot soak, a cup of bath salts, fifteen quiet minutes. There are not many other ten-dollars-an-evening rituals that do this much for how you feel the next morning.
